무엇이 더 중요한지 분별하자 / Discern what's more important

 

호화 여객선이 한 해협에서 조난당해서 사람들은 난파된 배의 잔재를 붙들고 구조선을 기다렸습니다. 이윽고 구조선이 도착했지만 파도가 높아 가까이 갈 수 없자 구조 요원은 밧줄을 던지며 밧줄을 잡고 구조선 가까이 오라고 했습니다. 하지만 몇 사람은 수영해서 잘 오다가 갑자기 허우적거리더니 결국 파도가 덮쳐 바다 깊이 빠지게 됐습니다. 나중에 알고 보니 그들이 몸속에 지닌 금괴의 무게 때문이었습니다. 온갖 보석과 금괴를 차마 버리지 못하고 지니고 나왔던 것입니다. 그들은 재물에 대한 욕심 때문에 생사의 갈림길에서도 무엇이 더 중요한지를 깨닫지 못했던 것입니다.
A luxury liner was stranded in a strait, and people clung to the remnants of the wrecked ship and waited for a rescue boat. When the boat finally arrived, but the waves were too high to get close, the rescuers threw out a rope and told them to grab it and swim to the boat. Some people swam and did well, but then they started to struggle, and eventually a wave overtook them and they fell into the depths of the sea. We later found out that it was the weight of the gold bars they were carrying on their bodies. They were carrying all kinds of jewelry and gold bars that they couldn't bear to throw away. Because of their greed for riches, they couldn't realize what was more important, even at the crossroads of life and death.

우리는 무엇을 선택할 것인가요? 죽음 앞에서 황금은 그저 돌덩이에 불과합니다. 하지만, 재물은 이성을 마비시키고 눈을 멀게 합니다. 결국 '필요'와 '욕망' 사이의 경계를 명확히 구분하는 삶의 순위가 필요합니다.

What will we choose? In the face of death, gold is just a lump of stone. However, riches paralyze and blind reason. In the end, we need a ranking of life that clearly demarcates the line between 'needs' and 'wants'.
