화가 나면 열까지 세라 / When you're angry, it gets to ten.

어느 학자에게 골칫덩이 제자가 한 명 있었습니다. 다른 제자들에 비해 현명하고 이해력이 높아 스승의 가르침을 금세 습득하는 뛰어난 제자였지만 한 가지 큰 문제점이 있었습니다.
A scholar once had a troublesome student. He was wiser and more understanding than the other students. He was a brilliant student who quickly picked up on his teacher's teachings. There was one big problem.

술을 마시면 금방 흥분하고 자제를 하지 못해 다른 사람과 주먹 다툼이 끊이지 않는 사람이었던 것입니다.
He was the kind of person who would get excited quickly when he drank and couldn't control himself, getting into fistfights with others.

고민하던 스승은 어느 날 그 제자를 불러 나무 상자 하나를 제자에게 맡겼습니다.
Troubled, the master summoned his disciple one day and entrusted him with a wooden box.

"상자 안에 든 물건은 오래전부터 우리 가문에 대대로 내려오는 도자기가 들어있다. 너는 내가 누구보다 믿고 아끼는 수제자이니 한 달간 그 도자기 상자를 맡기려고 한다. 한 달 동안 그 도자기 상자를 절대로 몸에서 떼놔서는 아니 될 것이다."
"The box contains a piece of pottery that has been in my family for generations. Since you are the potters I trust and love the most, I am entrusting you with the box for one month. For one month, you must never take it off your body."

존경하는 스승의 보물을 보관하게 된 제자는 한 달 후 다시 도자기를 돌려주었습니다. 스승은 제자에게 물었습니다.
The disciple, who had been entrusted with the treasures of his esteemed teacher, returned the pottery a month later. The master asked the disciple.

"최근 한 달 동안은 술자리에서 시비가 붙어도 한 번도 싸우지 않고 참았던 것 같은데 그 연유가 무엇이냐?"
"For the past month, it seems like you've never gotten into a fight at the bar, what's the reason for that?"

"혹시 싸움이 벌어지면 품속에 잘 보관했던 스승님의 보물이 깨질까 두려워 도저히 화를 낼 수가 없었습니다."
"I couldn't bring myself to be angry, for fear that if a fight broke out, my master's treasure, which I kept so carefully in my bosom, would be broken."

스승은 제자에게 '참을 인(忍)'을 종이에 크게 써서 주며 말했습니다.
The teacher gave the disciple a large piece of paper with the word "forbearance" written on it and said.

"칼날 인(刃) 자 밑에 마음 심(心) 자가 놓여있다. 너의 마음속에는 이 도자기를 보관한 상자보다 훨씬 무겁고 날카로운 칼날이 있다. 이러고도 네가 깨닫지 못한다면 그 칼날이 너를 심하게 찌를 날이 올 것이 분명하니 내 심히 두렵구나."
"Beneath the blade, the yin, lies the yang, the heart. There is a blade in your heart that is much heavier and sharper than the box in which this pottery is stored. If you do not realize this, I am deeply afraid that the day will come when that blade will pierce you severely."

스승의 깊은 사랑과 진의를 깨달은 제자는 '참을 인(忍)'이 써진 종이를 항상 몸에 지녔고 이후로는 술을 먹더라도 경거망동하는 일이 없었다고 합니다.
After realizing his teacher's deep love and sincerity, the disciple always kept a piece of paper with the word "patience" written on it, and from then on, even when he consumed alcohol, he didn't get carried away.

 

참을 인(忍)의 칼날은 참지 못하는 자를 가장 먼저 찌릅니다. 하지만 그 칼날을 잘 사용하면 온갖 미움과 증오 그리고 분노까지도 잘라버릴 수 있습니다.
The blade of the forbearer is the first to cut through the intolerant. But when wielded well, the blade can cut through all hatred, resentment, and even anger.
