세계적인 부호들을 직접 만나며 그들의 성공 비결을 책으로 만든 작가이자 성공철학의 대가 나폴레온 힐의 '나의 꿈 나의 인생'에 담긴 일화입니다. 1849년 미국 캘리포니아에서 금이 쏟아져 나와 그 해를 '황금의 해'라고 부릅니다. 그 시절 한 청년도 일확천금의 꿈을 안고 전 재산을 털어 캘리포니아의 금광을 샀습니다. 금방 부자가 될 거라는 꿈에 부푼 채 열심히 채굴했습니다. 간절함이 닿았는지 트럭을 채울 만큼의 금이 나왔습니다. 그러나 큰 실패는 다음 순간에 일어났습니다. 어느 날 갑자기 금광맥이 사라진 것처럼 더 이상 금 조각 하나도 나오지 않았던 것입니다. 결국 청년은 금광을 팔아야 했습니다. 그런데 새로 인수한 사람이 청년이 채굴한 지점에서 1m쯤 더 파고들어 가자 노다지가 터져 나왔습니다. 이 소식을 들은 청년은 광산을 포기한 것을 뼈저리게 후회했습니다. 그리곤 이 실패의 경험을 통해 '최후의 순간까지 최선을 다해야 성공할 수 있다'는 황금보다 더 귀한 교훈을 얻었다고 생각했습니다. 그렇게 청년은 자신만의 '1m 철학'을 정립하고 보험회사에서 일하면서 고객을 대할 때마다 끝까지 최선을 다해 그 철학을 몸소 실천했습니다. 그 결과 그는 큰 실적을 올리며 성공하게 되었습니다.
This is the story of Napoleon Hill, the author of My Dream My Life, who met some of the world's richest people and wrote about their secrets to success. In 1849, gold was pouring out of California and the year was dubbed the "golden year." A young man had a dream of making it big and risked his entire fortune to buy a gold mine in California. He mined hard, thinking he'd get rich quick, and his eagerness paid off, producing enough gold to fill a truck. But the big failure happened next: one day, suddenly, not a single piece of gold came out, as if the vein had disappeared. Eventually, the young man had to sell the mine, and when the new owner dug a meter further into the mine than the young man had done, a nugget of gold came out. Upon hearing this news, the young man bitterly regretted giving up on his mine. He then realized that this experience of failure had taught him a more valuable lesson than gold: "You can only succeed if you give it your all until the very end." So he developed his own "1 meter philosophy" and practiced it in his job at the insurance company by giving it his all every time he dealt with a customer. As a result, he became very successful.

이처럼 위대한 성공이라는 것은 사람들이 패배의 투구를 벗은 시점에서 불과 얼마 지나지 않았을 때 찾아옵니다. '이 정도면 됐다'는 생각에서 '한 걸음만 더'라는 생각으로 바꾸면 그동안 놓쳤던 성공을 마주할 수 있을 것입니다. 성공은 실패라는 생각의 1m 뒤에 있습니다.
The greatest successes come just after people take off the helmet of defeat. If you shift from thinking "I'm good enough" to thinking "just one more step," you'll see the success you've been missing. Success is one meter behind the thought of failure.
